Il Manifesto della Sobrietà Digitale

lake8.dev — Bologna, 2026

Dove l'economia dell'attenzione estrae valore dai vostri clic, noi vi chiediamo di prestare attenzione ai watt.

Misuriamo. Pubblichiamo. Lasciamo che siano i dati a parlare.

Web server, database, mail, analytics, IoT, license server, DNS failover, backup. Tutto. Sempre acceso. Sempre in produzione.

Consumo annuale stimato: < 200 kWh.

  • Tommy — architettura, progettazione e direzione tecnica
  • Claudio (Claude Code) — accelerazione dello sviluppo software

3. Container-First è ecologia

4. La sobrietà è osservabilità

Ogni sistema informatico consuma energia.

L'approccio self-hosted offre vantaggi misurabili:

  • Dati mantenuti all'interno dell'organizzazione

Misureremo insieme.

The Digital Sobriety Manifesto

lake8.dev — Bologna, 2026

Where the attention economy extracts value from your clicks, we ask you to pay attention to watts.

We measure. We publish. We let the data speak.

1. Our ESG certification is a €20 smart plug

While the cloud giants publish 200-page sustainability reports, written by consultants to justify megawatts of opaque consumption, we measure our impact with a Tapo P110.

Result: < 30W for the entire production stack.

Web server, database, mail, analytics, IoT, license server, DNS failover, backup. All of it. Always on. Always in production.

Consumption is measured moment by moment. The annual projection derives solely from that data.

It's not a promise. It's a measurement. Period.

< 30W does not include the passive draw of the UPS — that is safety infrastructure, not operational consumption. We are serious people: we don't inflate the favourable numbers, nor do we hide the awkward ones.

Estimated annual consumption: < 200 kWh. Less than a refrigerator. Less than the heating for our CEO's kennel.

Updated 19/08/2026 — the rack grew, and consumption grew with it. Until August 2026 the estimate was < 155 kWh, with three boards and three SSDs. On 18/08/2026 a fourth board joined — a second Raspberry Pi 4B with its own SSD, hosting the community forum — and the projection rose to roughly 190 kWh a year. More hardware, more watts: there is no clever story to tell here.

We publish the increase with the same face we would publish a decrease. The live number, measured right now, is always the same one: power-stats.json. If one day this page and that file disagree, it is this page that is out of date.

2. Efficiency is born of simplicity

We don't measure a company's worth by headcount or office square footage. We measure it by the number of problems solved with the least possible use of resources.

The lake8.dev team:

  • Tommy — architecture, design and technical direction
  • Claudio (Claude Code) — software development acceleration
  • BASIC — Lagotto Romagnolo, unofficial CEO and Semantic Auditor

Artificial intelligence does not replace competence. It amplifies it. And BASIC makes sure nobody overreaches with unsupported inferences.

3. Container-First is ecology

We design software Container-First: if it runs on a Raspberry Pi, it runs anywhere.

ARM, Linux, Windows, cloud, Kubernetes: no code changes.

We validate on the worst case: a Raspberry Pi 4B. If the software keeps correct performance and contained consumption on limited hardware, it means the architecture was designed with attention to resources.

Portability is not a side effect. It's a design requirement. Sobriety is not a limit. It's a superior architecture.

4. Sobriety is observability

Every computing system consumes energy. The difference is knowing how much.

We practise sobriety engineering: we publish our stack's energy consumption in real time. Anyone can verify it at stats.lake8.dev/geo.html.

Cloud providers do not publish per-customer consumption. We do. End of story.

If our consumption rises tomorrow, the dashboard will show it. If it falls, it will show that too.

We don't ask for trust. We ask for verification.

5. Self-hosted means control

For many manufacturing companies, software handles production, planning, quality and maintenance data. The self-hosted approach offers measurable advantages:

  • Data kept inside the organisation
  • Direct control of the infrastructure and its energy policies
  • No unnecessary transoceanic data transfers
  • No ghost servers grinding power for idle sessions
  • Freedom to migrate without depending on a specific platform

It's not the right solution for every reality. It's the one we consider most suitable when control, integration and transparency are design requirements.

6. The open challenge

We would like the industry to evolve towards greater observability.

We invite any SaaS vendor or hyperscaler to publish real, measured energy consumption per single active customer, with the same granularity and transparency as our public dashboard.

Not aggregate averages. Not purchased carbon credits. Not third-party estimates.

Real consumption, per customer, measured, public.

More public data means less marketing and more engineering.

Until the industry publishes the data, we will keep proving that < 30W is enough.

Das Manifest der digitalen Genügsamkeit

lake8.dev — Bologna, 2026

Webserver, Datenbank, Mail, Analytics, IoT, Lizenzserver, DNS-Failover, Backup. Alles. Immer eingeschaltet. Immer in Produktion.

3. Container-First ist Ökologie

ARM, Linux, Windows, Cloud, Kubernetes: keine Codeänderung.

4. Genügsamkeit ist Beobachtbarkeit

Jedes Computersystem verbraucht Energie.

Consumo anual estimado: < 200 kWh.

  • BASIC — Lagotto Romagnolo, CEO no oficial y Auditor Semántico

3. Container-First es ecología

No pedimos confianza. Pedimos verificación.

5. Self-hosted significa control

No medias agregadas.
